Tidying up, or taking your data with you

Budgets collect things over time: an envelope for a trip you already took, an account at a bank you left, last year's budget. Each can be put away without losing its history. And if you decide to leave Mintro, you can take everything with you in one file.

What you'll do

Step 1

Close an envelope

You can close an envelope you no longer need, from the envelope's menu in its details. A closed envelope can't hold money, so Mintro deals with its money first and tells you how: if it still has $432.26, the button reads Return $432.26 and close, and the money goes back to Ready to assign; if it is overspent, you Cover it and then close it. Its filed transactions stay filed, Reports still counts them, and you can reopen it from its own page whenever you want it back.

Step 2

Delete an account

An account you will never use again can be deleted from its settings panel on Accounts. The panel says how many transactions it holds. Deleting the account removes them, takes them out of any envelopes they were filed in, and recalculates every envelope they affected. That can't be undone, so only the household admin can do it, and the panel suggests exporting first. A card's payment envelope closes along with the card.

Step 3

Close a budget

Last year's budget, or a side business that has wound down, can be closed from Budgets. It is marked closed and asks nothing more of you, and every envelope, transaction, and goal is kept exactly as it was. You reopen it the same way. Only the admin can close a budget.

Step 4

Take everything with you

Settings → Your data has two exports: Export this budget, and Export every budget, which puts all of them in one JSON file, with your accounts, payees, and rules included once. The file is yours to keep whether you stay or not. To leave, export first, then delete your account under Security in your profile. Mintro then removes your banks at Plaid, ends your subscription, deletes your billing record at Stripe, revokes your agents' keys, and deletes every budget in a household only you are in. In a shared household, only you leave; its budgets stay with the people still in it.

Settings, the Your data page: export this budget, export every budget, and how leaving works
  1. Exports this one budget as a single file.
  2. Exports every budget at once. Download this before you leave.
