Connect your bank
Once a bank is linked, its transactions come into Mintro on their own, so you don't need to download spreadsheets. You link a bank on Plaid's page, never in a chat and never on Mintro's own pages. Nothing from the bank is added to a budget until you have told Mintro what each account is and which transactions you want.
What you'll do
- Link a bank on Plaid's page, where your login stays
- Tell Mintro what each of its accounts is: one you already have, a new one, a loan, or one to leave out
- Choose which transactions are added, so transactions you already entered are never counted twice
- Reconnect when the bank asks you to sign in again, and remove a bank cleanly
Step 1
Link your bank
Open Settings, choose the Banks tab and press Link a bank, or add an account, choose Link it to my bank and press Open Plaid to link your bank. Plaid's page opens, and you find your bank and sign in to it there. Your username and password go only to Plaid and your bank. Mintro never sees them, and neither does any chat. Your agent can start linking for you: it gives you the link to Plaid's page and waits while you sign in.

Step 2
Tell Mintro what each account is
Back on Accounts, a panel lists every account the bank shared: New from your bank: say what each account is. For each one, pick: one of your accounts (the chequing you have been keeping by hand becomes bank-fed), a new account, one of your loans (only its balance follows the bank; payments come from the account that pays them), or don't sync it. If the bank shares a joint account you don't budget for, one click leaves it out.
Each account also takes a start date. Transactions from before that date are set aside, because the history you already entered covers those days. Tick Add new transactions without asking me if you trust what the bank sends; leave it unticked, and every new transaction waits for you to look at it first.
Step 3
Choose which transactions are added
The first time the bank's transactions come in, you review them in three groups. Already in your budget are transactions with the same amount, within a week, as one you typed or imported. Adding one replaces your transaction with the bank's, and keeps your payee, envelope, and note. New are transactions that don't look like anything you entered; your payee rules name them, and a rule that files will put them in its envelope. Before your start date are set aside. You can change any transaction to add it or skip it, then add them all in one go.

Step 4
Reconnect, or remove a bank
Every so often a bank asks you to sign in again. Mintro tells you on the bank's card and by email, with the date the connection will stop if nobody signs in. Reconnecting takes about a minute and loses nothing. Only the household's admin can remove a bank, and Mintro asks one question first: Keep my history keeps every account and transaction, as accounts you update by hand from then on; Delete everything from this bank deletes its accounts and their transactions too.

Payees and payee rules
Turn the bank's codes into names you recognise. A payee rule names every matching transaction for you, and can file it into an envelope too if you ask.

Reconciling with your bank statement
Tick the transactions your statement shows, check that the totals match, and lock them. What cleared and reconciled mean, and what it means when a locked total changes later.
